Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). Children will grow depending on how they are nurtured. Although bringing up children in the right way does not guarantee that they will not make mistakes, everybody in a position of influencing their character should do the best they can to instill good characters in them. Here are life saving qualities to nurture in children.
Help children discover an all-loving God. Let them experience love in action within the family. Set an example by loving others so that children can learn how God wants them to experience His love.
Assist children find out various ways in which God shows His love to humanity. Make every effort to make them realize the joy that comes from walking with God. You should be in a position to demonstrate it in your life so that they can have a firsthand experience.
Teach children to strive to make peace with all people. Insist on the need to be content and unselfish. Let them learn to be happy with others instead of being jealousy.
Do helpful and loving things for others. They should learn to think of the needs of others other than what they themselves want. Treat strangers well. Visit the sick, orphanages and let them have a firsthand experience to care for the needs of others.
Humans have a tendency of wanting things happen as they wish. This craving is not the best. Let the children learn to be willing to wait for things to happen in God’s time and according to His will.
Whatever you want others do for you do for them first – this is the golden rule (Mat 7:12). Enlighten children to always make a choice to lovingly behave towards other people. Remember you are their first book – be a good one.
This is an important virtue for any straightforward individual. First, let them learn to have faith in God. Remember without faith it is impossible to please God and that faith comes by hearing the word of God (Heb 11:6). Ensure you adequately share the word of God to grow the faith of your children. Teach them to be true to smaller and bigger things acting in transparency.
Teach children to be careful with the younger, weaker and vulnerable ones. Show them an example by treating them gently.
This is all about temperance. Let children learn to do everything with restraint. No matter how good something is, too much of it is not good. Help them learn to make better choices.
